Hey, all!
Ben was pretty good today for us. No tantrums...yeah! He had a major fit last night though. He didn't want to leave aunt Jenny's house so he cried and kicked all the way home. He calmed down when we got home, but didn't want to do anything...not even play outside or go for a walk in the wagon which are his favorite things (he was extremely tired at that point.) Then, when it was time to take a bath and get ready for bed he decided he did want to go outside. I said "no, it's bathtime" which lead to ANOTHER major tantrum! He had such a fit that we didn't even get the bath in...sigh. He did calm down and let me read to him and sing songs. However, he slept very restless...which has been the case the last week or two. It seems like this happens every now and then...he'll have a week or so that he doesn't sleep well. May be related to growth spurts or something?? Or, could be allergy related as his nose is so stuffy right now...despite full daily doses of Zyrtec. Not sure...any one else notice this with their kids?
Anyway, no school next week!! They are doing parent/therapist conferences. We are probably going to go crazy not knowing what to do with ourselves! But, we are going to get together with some of the other kids and moms a couple days, so that will be fun. Also, I'm looking forward to meeting with the therapists and discussing some of the behavior issues we are seeing at home. (He does great at school...which is good. I suppose I'd rather that he do well there and get his frustrations out at home.)
So, that's where we are now. We'll get an update on what he is working on at school and how he is doing and I'll pass that along. I did talk to one of the speech therapists yesterday and she said he is doing really well and noted his improved eye contact! Also, we have noticed a definite increase in his social awareness. He notices people (adults AND children) a lot more now when we are out and about. He even gets excited when he sees kids which is really good for him. He also LOVES matching games...we've gotten him several sets of cards and he does so well with it. That is something we had trouble with during early intervention therapy before CHIP so we are excited about that.
Well, it is time for stories and songs. Hope everyone is well!
God Bless!
Julie, Jer and Benny

Sorry he is taking his tantrums out on you guys. Just a thought: he at least feels safe enough at home to exhibit those behaviors. He knows you guys can deal, or perhaps he is expecting something as a response to the tantrums? Not necessarily in that exact moment, but it may be a beginning of better communication on his part with you. Just a thought??
Pam, I do think you are on to something there. In a way, the tantrums are a good thing (although they don't feel like it at the time!) He was SO passive before, no defiant behavior at all. So, in a way, I think it is typical for his age. And, they have been over typical things, at least most of the time (like not wanting to leave grandma's.) Still, sometimes we have no idea what they are from...maybe something out of place or a change in the scripted routine he's developed...that's when it feels more like autism.
